Mumbai Indians registered a dominant 50-run win over Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League as Nat Sciver-Brunt and Harmanpreet Kaur starred with unbeaten half-centuries.
NEW DELHI: Mumbai Indians produced a dominant all-round performance to defeat Delhi Capitals by 50 runs in the Women’s Premier League on Saturday. After posting a strong total with the bat, MI’s bowlers backed it up brilliantly to seal a convincing victory without any late drama.
Asked to bat first, Mumbai were led by exceptional unbeaten knocks from Nat Sciver-Brunt and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur. Sciver-Brunt played a composed innings of 70 not out from 46 balls, while Harmanpreet counter-attacked with a blistering unbeaten 74 off just 42 deliveries.
Their efforts powered Mumbai Indians to an imposing 195 for 4, a strong response following their narrow defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru a day earlier.
Mumbai’s innings began on a shaky note as Amelia Kerr was dismissed on the very first delivery, continuing her struggles with the bat after edging a wide ball early on. However, Sciver-Brunt quickly took charge and stabilised the innings with confident stroke play.
She combined effectively with opener Gunalan Kamalini, adding 49 valuable runs to rebuild momentum. Kamalini contributed before falling to an impressive delivery from young pacer Nandani Sharma.
From that point, Sciver-Brunt and Harmanpreet took complete control. The experienced duo stitched together a crucial 66-run partnership for the third wicket, forming the foundation of MI’s big total.
Sciver-Brunt reached her half-century in just 32 balls, finding the boundary 13 times. Harmanpreet maintained the aggressive tempo, striking eight fours and three sixes, and accelerated further once Sciver-Brunt departed.
In reply, Delhi Capitals struggled from the outset while chasing 196. Nicola Carey turned the match firmly in Mumbai’s favour by dismissing key batters Shafali Verma and Laura Wolvaardt in the same over, leaving DC reeling at 33 for 3.
The collapse continued as Delhi slipped to 46 for 5 within the first seven overs. Despite a fighting half-century from Chinelle Henry, who scored 56 off 33 balls, the chase never looked achievable.
Sciver-Brunt also impressed with the ball, claiming two wickets, while Amelia Kerr made amends with figures of 3 for 24. Captained for the first time by India’s World Cup star Jemimah Rodrigues, Delhi Capitals were eventually bowled out for 145 in 19 overs.
Mumbai Indians thus returned to winning ways with a commanding and well-rounded performance.
