Glenn Maxwell Could Serve as Backup Wicketkeeper for Australia in T20 World Cup 2026
Australian chief selector George Bailey reveals that all-rounder Glenn Maxwell may act as a reserve wicketkeeper for the 2026 T20 World Cup squad. Australia’s spin-heavy team is led by captain Mitchell Marsh.
Australia’s chief selector George Bailey has hinted that all-rounder Glenn Maxwell might serve as a backup wicketkeeper for the Australian team at the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to take place in India and Sri Lanka.
With Josh Inglis selected as the team’s primary wicketkeeper, Australia has focused on assembling a squad rich in spin bowlers and versatile all-rounders. Bailey described Maxwell as a “natural” behind the stumps, recalling how Maxwell kept wickets during his younger days.
“I’ve seen Glenn keep wickets before. He’s a natural — he used to keep when he was younger,” Bailey told cricket.au.
Bailey also emphasized the importance of squad balance, noting the need to manage day-to-day minor injuries versus more serious ones, and whether the team could afford to carry additional players.
Australia’s provisional squad for the T20 World Cup reflects a spin-heavy strategy, with seasoned all-rounder Mitchell Marsh named captain of the 15-member squad.
Placed in Group B, Australia will face Ireland, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, and Oman. Their tournament campaign begins against Ireland in Colombo on February 11, followed by matches against Zimbabwe on February 13, Sri Lanka on February 16, and Oman on February 20.
