NEW DELHI: Star Indian batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were rested in the third round of the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Monday, missing Delhi’s and Mumbai’s respective fixtures.
Both players had participated in their teams’ first two matches but were kept out of action for the third round. Delhi faced Saurashtra at the Karnataka Cricket Association (KSCA) Stadium in Alur, while Mumbai clashed with Chhattisgarh at the Jaipuria Vidyalaya Ground in Jaipur. Virat and Rohit had initially been scheduled to play only two games in the tournament, and their current absence fulfills those commitments.
In their opening matches, Kohli showcased his in-form batting with scores of 131 and 77 for Delhi, demonstrating his continued dominance in domestic cricket. Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, started Mumbai’s campaign explosively, hitting 155 in the first match before being dismissed for a golden duck against Uttarakhand.
According to reports from Cricbuzz, Kohli is expected to return for one more game, representing Delhi against Railways on January 6, ahead of India’s ODI series against New Zealand, which begins on January 11. Rohit, however, is set to conclude his participation in the tournament, with no further appearances planned for Mumbai.
Both Kohli and Rohit are anticipated to join the national team’s training camp soon, where they will continue preparations for the upcoming limited-overs series. Their early rest in the domestic tournament is part of workload management strategies, ensuring peak performance for India’s international assignments.
